We are looking for a suitable candidate to join our growing Private Client team as a Legal Assistant to support the administrative aspects of Wills, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, and Probates. Although previous experience is preferred, this is not essential as we are able to provide full SR training to the successful candidate.

More importantly, we need you to have excellent communication, IT, and customer service skills to deal with our clients with care and empathy and to work as part of a dedicated team. Most work will be produced through BigHand dictations meaning that accurate typing and attention to detail, as well as a high standard of grammar and spelling, are all essential. Having the ability to work under pressure to required deadlines is also an advantage. You will report to the Head of the Private Client team.

    Summary of role:

Dealing with client enquiries both face to face and over the telephone and making appointments as required.

Supporting the Private Client team with file openings and helping our Solicitors and Paralegals to progress matters through to completion and closing.

Dealing with general file management including compliance.

Assisting and undertaking various delegated tasks from team members.

Working efficiently within our Leap case management system

If you feel such a role is for you, please send an up-to-date CV with a covering letter to Lindsey McIntyre, via lm@scottrichards.co.uk.

If you have any questions about the role, please do give Lindsey a call on 01626 771194.

Hours: 29 hours per week. We are a 4-day week firm, meaning our staff are paid for 5 days, but work for 4! You will be allocated a day off in the week. Our office hours are Monday – Friday (9:00am – 5:00pm)

    Closing Date: Tuesday 20th September

    Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

  5. The Law & LGBTQIA+

At Scott Richards, we’re beyond excited that Pride has finally found its way to Teignmouth and jumped at the chance to show our full support; to be part of the movement that takes the LGBTQIA+ community from a shushed topic at the table, to being a celebration of who you are.

Historically, the law has not been either kind or accepting towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and in the UK, the start of the battle for equality can be traced right back to 1533 with the dreadful passing of an Act during Henry VIII’s reign. Very little changed for the community until the 1950s and 60s when both the Wolfenden Report in the UK and Stonewall in the US finally started to stoke the winds of change, sending waves around the world.

Substantial change in the law finally came in 1998 with the Human Rights Act and was the first huge step to breaking down barriers for the community. This included basic human rights such as the right to private and family life, freedom of thought, the freedom of expression, and most importantly the prohibition of discrimination. As the barriers started coming down, people from the LGBTQIA+ community were able to live without fear that the law could change and criminalise them. The Equality Act 2010 added further securities for the community by adding sexual orientation and sex as a protected characteristic.

In 2004, Civil Partnerships were created for those within the community to allow them to hold a status like marriage, before finally in 2013, after years of campaigning, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into force, providing true equality for same-sex married couples compared with their straight counterparts. It is now also the case that straight couples can have a Civil Partnership, which used to be reserved only for the same-sex couples. In more recent times, we’ve seen embracement of the community in other areas as well, with same sex couples now able to foster and adopt children, and being provided with access to fertility options to start families.

Whilst huge advances have been made in the last century, we know there is more to be done to help the LGBTQIA+ community. At Scott Richards we look forward to continuing working with the community in the future and seeing the progression that Pride and your voices can make both to our small community, and the world.

  9. 4-Day Week!

100% of the work – in 80% of the time – for 100% pay?

    Yes.

The last couple of years have been…well, intense, but for all the negatives it brought, the pandemic made everyone take a step back and re-evaluate things, encouraged innovation and showed us the importance of mental wellbeing.

We can’t think of a better way to use all that we have learned during the upside-down, than to lead the way locally with a 4-day working week!

Our offices will remain open 5 days a week, and you can be assured that you won’t notice any drop in our first-class legal service – but our staff will enjoy a designated extra day off to rest, creating a healthy work-life balance which we know will mean a positive, focused, and productive #TeamSR at the office.

…added bonus: a further reduction in our carbon footprint 😉
