COVID Update – Our offices are now fully open!

When clients do visit our offices, we want them to feel as comfortable as possible. We have introduced a traffic-light lanyard system in our Reception area, enabling clients to choose the lanyard colour that represents the level of social distancing they are comfortable with. This allows us to clearly identify and respect our clients’ personal preferences.

We look forward to welcoming you at both our Teignmouth and Newton Abbot offices.

As always, contact us on 01626 772 441 or law@scottrichards.co.uk for all your legal needs.

Here to help, whatever you need.

Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning 2020

    Macmillan

Covid may have stopped us from hosting our normal Macmillan Cancer Support event outside our offices, with our gazebos, homemade baking & competitions (who can forget 2019’s sausage roll-eating contest!) but it wasn’t going to stop us raising money for this very deserving cause.

On Friday 25th September, we teamed up with one of our favourite local Teignmouth cafes, Finley Browns to put on a delicious table of baked goods inside our offices and do some socially-distanced, internal fundraising.

We’re delighted to announce that we raised £126.41 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

A big thank you to the generosity of our staff and our Partners on this very different Macmillan Coffee Morning. Here’s hoping next year, we will be back to our normal fundraising antics outside, under our beloved gazebos!

  6. Dawlish Walking Festival 2020 – Cancelled

Sustainable Dawlish, Scott Richards and Dawlish Town Council have taken the decision to cancel the Dawlish Walking Festival. This is due to government guidance on Coronavirus, together with the Ramblers and Walking For Health suspension of all walks until the end of May.

We are not planning to rearrange the festival for later in the year due to the time it takes to organise the walks, but we hope to be back next year.

The organisers had this to say: “We really appreciate the efforts of all our volunteer walk leaders, all the walkers who support the festival and to Scott Richards for their continued sponsorship. Keep safe and well.

You can find more detail on Facebook.

  7. Lasting Powers of Attorney Explained

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, by 2025 more than 1 million people in the UK will have dementia. One in five people over 85 already suffer from it, being more common in women than men. If you should lose capacity without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, trying to manage your financial affairs becomes increasingly difficult.

If you should lose capacity and you do not have a LPA in place, relatives or friends could face delays and expense to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order so that they can take control of your decisions.

Lasting Powers of Attorney are legal documents that are put in place so that if and when required, your attorneys can step in to assist you.

There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA):

    1. Property & Financial affairs; and

    2. Health & Welfare

These LPAs grant their attorneys legal authority to deal with their financial decisions and their health and welfare. People assume that LPAs are for the elderly, but it is in fact for all ages as you can become incapacitated at any time.

Your attorneys are chosen by you and need to be someone you trust. To be an attorney, they need to be over the age of 18 and willing to take on the role. It is important to discuss this with your attorneys before appointing them, as it is a big responsibility for them to take. Their role is to make decisions based on your best interests. You are able to restrict the decisions they make, or you can let them make all of your decisions on your behalf.

Your LPA is tailored by you, for you and ensures that your future is taken care of with regard to control of your assets, finances and health & welfare decisions.

To book an appointment or to discuss any aspect of LPAs, please contact a member of our Private Client Team on 01626 772441 or email us.

For the month of December, Scott Richards took part in a reverse advent calendar, collecting different items each day in aid of the fantastic local charity Homeless in Teignbridge Support (HITS).  HITS work with homeless people and those in crisis and need throughout Teignbridge and surrounding rural areas.

The people that they have helped include those who are homeless, victims of domestic violence, ex-service personnel, the elderly, families in poverty, disabled people, ex-offenders and many others.

The Centre provides help, support, advice, hot meals and friendship.  You can read more about what they do here.
